Nigeria's active subscriber base is now 130million with exclusive reach across all social and demographic groups that cuts across the Nigerian economy.

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Eugene Juwah, stated this on Thursday in Lagos at the launch of the Corporate Governance Code for the Telecommunications Industry.

According to him, the ever dynamic and expanding subscriber base in Nigeria makes it imperative that operators in the telecommunications industry in Nigeria uphold a code of corporate governance specific to the sector.

Also, the EVC maintained that the code became necessary because the telecoms sector is of strategic and high impact significance to the economy at a micro level. "It is made up of a wide range of operators with diversity in size, scope of operations, asymmetry qualifications, legal and regulatory requirements, capital market activities as well as local and cross-border relationships".

He submitted that although, corporate governance codes around the world, take several forms, some are generic (or national), in scope, while others are drawn up for specific groups of companies (sector specific), or designed to address a specific aspect of corporate governance such as board practices, transparency and disclosure standards.

Dr. Juwah opined that while National Code of Corporate governance are typically focused on country specific issues and are aimed at improving and guiding governance practices within a country's specific legal environment and business context, sector specific corporate governance codes on the other hand, address the specific peculiarities of the affected sector which in Nigeria's case is the telecoms sector.
