East Africa's premier Mobile Start ups competition and confrence, PIVOTEast 2014 has kicked off today in Nairobi.
This year's event marks the fourth edition of the annual event that was started way back in 2011. The event allows 25 East Africa top mobile entrepreneurs pitch to a rich audience. The contestants are given a chance to win prices and expose their start ups to investors and prospective clients.
The event is also geared towards nurturing the growing ICT talent in East Africa will culminate in a two-day competition that will see the most innovative tech startups of 2014 highlighted.
According to John Kieti, Lead,MLab," since its nception in 2011, Pivot East has worked with 100 entrepreneurs who have had a chance to pitch their ideas."
He also said that this year's event, the participants had a chance to geta insights from a pool of alumnis. Over the fouryears alao themlab has been able to use upto $120,000 to help the star ups.
This year, the final twenty five sart ups were grouped into five main categories, which were, utilities, entertainment, society, finance and enterprise. Main sponsors for this event were, Chasebank, Samsung, Intel, Facebook and Homeboyz Foundation.
Last year the overal winners were Kytabu under mobile society category which is is a micro-leasing textbook subscription application that enables students to get just the material they need to learn, when they need it, wherever they are and pay for just that piece of content while they have it. SleepOut, under mobile enterprise category which is an SMS-driven booking process that connects both commercial and peer-to-peer hosts with guests and agents. Then there was Kola studios under entertainment, which is a two-player card game based on the popular Ugandan game played with a pack of cards.The game can be played on Mobile (Android) and on Facebook.
Under finance category,GO Finance Company ltd carried the day.GO, leverages business value chains & technology to provide MSMEs at the base of the pyramid and Ma3route had the overall win under the utilities category
The overall winner in each category is set to be announced tomorrow and the winners are set to win a combined $50,000.
