ZIMBABWEANS should embrace new technologies to successfully implement the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset), a Cabinet minister has said. Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Dr Olivia Muchena said this in a paper presented to National Defence College students in Harare on Monday.

She said an empowered society could only be realised if people took science and technology seriously.

"Zim-Asset talks of an agenda for socio-economic transformation in a sustainable manner and it means economic transformation has to be premised on science and technology development," Dr Muchena said.

"Yes, money and resources are necessary, but if we do not have knowledge to exploit them then they will remain resources. We are driving towards an empowered society through knowledge and certain skills to grow our economy," she said.

"That thrust should make our higher and tertiary graduates understand the international geo-political situation, meaning it is important for our people, at whatever level, to have knowledge of regional and international geo-political situations and how they impact on the economy."

Dr Muchena said there was need to change the values driving education.
