Surfline Communications Limited has launched 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology in Ghana, urging the country's businesses to adopt the latest technology and assuring Ghanaians of affordable, super-fast and reliable Internet provided by this technology.
Surfline Communications CEO Dr Yaw Akoto told the audience that 4G LTE loads websites faster, sends and receives large documents with ease, downloads music and movies quickly, allows one to watch videos online and uses Skype, and video conferencing facilities uninterrupted.
The technology was first launched by TeliaSonera in Oslo (Norway) and Stockholm (Sweden) in December 2009. I is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals, and is based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA network technologies.
Surfline Communications Limited, which launched the high-publicised technology late last week, is a Ghanaian-owned private company established in 2011 providing wireless broadband connectivity.
The company said it has been working tirelessly over the past three years to bring 4G LTE to Ghana.
Surfline Communications announced in July 2013 that together with Alcatel-Lurent they would be providing the hardware and software, along with installation optimisation, maintenance and managed services across and beyond Ghana.
Akoto said his company would use modern technologies to improve Ghana's operation businesses. He also said that the technology's initial deployment would begin with Accra and Tema and later be extended to other parts of the country.
The current deployment is the largest LTE placement in the sub-region," he explained.
The launch was graced by the country's Vice-President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur. He said access to information in today's global world opened free opportunities that allowed for the adoption of new and improved ways of doing things.
However, despite the technology doing wonders in many parts the world, 4G LTE remains almost unnoticed in Africa and no African country has so far managed to break into the world's top 10 in terms of penetration.
