A delegation of businessmen from Sweden is currently in the country to evaluate opportunities in the ICT sector as part of a 10-country tour.

According to the head of delegation and market unit manager for the Swedish trade and investment council Robin Petterson, the delegation which is a result of the SymbioICT programme hopes to support the local ICT through Swedish experience, expertise and technology.

"We recognize the level of skills available especially in Kenya where Ericsson has set up their office and we hope we can help develop some of these skills to create more innovative products like we have seen in the past," said Pettersen.

The decision to visit the selected countries was informed by the rapid adoption of ICT, which has seen Sweden being ranked highest among digitalized societies in the world with ICT accounting for 13 per cent of Swedish exports.

The visit comes at a time when government and major operators in Kenya and Uganda are making major investments in infrastructure and ICT innovations.

The meeting was attended by government and private sector representatives - key among these being cabinet secretary for ICT Dr Fred Matiang'i; Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore and Ericsson's head of Sub Saharan Africa region, Fredrik Jejdling.
